Description
An early morning view from above shows Havana Cuba just barely awake. The stars of the show at this hour are the historic buildings, from the Capitolio (unlit and under restoration on the far left), the Gran Teatro de La Habana; and the Inglaterra and Telegrafo hotels. The Gran Teatro de La Habana is located in a building known as the Galician Centre of Havana. Construction began in 1908 to serve as a social center for Galician immigrants to Havana. Its facilities include theatres and a concert hall. The Hotel Inglaterra dates from 1875, is one of the oldest hotels in Havana, and has been declared national monument. It recreates the atmosphere of the colonial period. Finally, the Hotel Telegrafo anchors the corner of one of Havana's busiest intersections. It dates from 1888 at this location, but only as a one-story building. In 1982, La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
