Description
Earth ball fungus. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from the fruiting body of an earth ball (Scleroderma vulgare) mushroom. The fruiting body has an outside peridium that is thick and scaly (crimson), inside which is a reticulum of hyphae that form hymenium layers (pink). The hymenium produces basidia which produce basidiospores that are released inside the ball forming a gleba. When mature, the earth ball splits open releasing the glebal mass, which is then dispersed by animals, rain, etc. Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
