Skunk cabbage is a gorgeous plant. The flowers arrive in early spring and, through thermogenesis, can even melt frozen ground or ice. The heat and a foul odor draw in insects which act as pollinators. The leaves give off a skunk-like odor if torn. This picture was taken March 1, 2011, in Green Lane, PA. This colony grows next to (and sometimes in) a small stream.
