Description
The Tarot card "Eight of Swords", illustrated with some reference to the classic design by A.E. Waite. However, I really hate A.E. Waite's old-fashioned sexism which sometimes seems to be laced with a certain amount of sadism. His design shows a blindfolded woman firmly tied to a post on the beach, while the tide, apparently rising, washes around her feet. How cruel is that? And why is it his women who get blindfolded in preference to his men? And, going off on a tangent, why are so many more of his women nude compared to his men? Enough of that. A.E. Waite says that the Eight of Swords is a card of "temporary durance", so my illustration shows a woman standing with calm dignity, chained by the wrists to a row of eight swords; perhaps soon she will find the strength and the resolution to lift her arms and stride forward, pulling the swords out of the sand, on her first step towards freedom.
