Einstein and his sister Maja. German-Swiss-US physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) as a teenager in Germany in around 1893 with his sister Maja Einstein (1881-1951, holding parasol). Maja and Albert were good friends, with Maja spending her last years in Princeton with Albert in the USA. Einstein's General Relativity (1915) rewrote our concepts of gravity, space and time. His mass-energy equation (E=mc2, derived from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity) led to nuclear fission and the atomic bomb. Einstein also contributed to quantum theory. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect.
