Description
The impossibly blue winter sky is cloudless in the background giving rise to dramatic morning shadows in the garden arcade of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. San Lorenzo de El Escorial is an imposing castle in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains northwest of Madrid. It is an historical residence of the King of Spain, built between 1563 and 1584. Despite the severity of the architecture, the gardens played an essential role. This arcade looks out onto the Friar's Garden along the south facade of the castle. The gardens are free to visit and I saw locals and tourists alike enjoying the beautiful day for a stroll. On 2 November 1984, UNESCO declared The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo of El Escorial a World Heritage Site.
