I was looking for an outing to get me out of my usual environment and found that there was a wildlife refuge a little more than an hour away. The William L Finley wildlife refuge provides a wintering environment for the dusky Canadian geese. There are farms in the area, similar to Sauvie Island, but the area ranges from marshland to fields, to hills with white oak and maples. Many of the trails in the Witer are closed to protect the wintering birds, although there are a few that are open year round. However, there are viewing areas, and at one of them, these elk were grazing in the distance. They had started to move to the east, as something appeared to be startling them - perhaps a coyote. I had seen a 5-6 earlier about a mile away, including some males, but this herd was quite large.
