Fort Wayne in Detroit has a history as a fort from 1701, and Indian burial mounds back to about 1000 A.D. The city of Detroit, together with coalitions of local citizen's groups are struggling to maintain and restore it, with great enthusiasm but very limited funds. As a result, some of the buildings are so deteriorated they may now be beyond restoration, as for example, this duplex which was home to the families of two enlisted men. Notice the severe water damage, and the trees growing out of the cellar, the porch, the upstairs window, and even right through the brick wall. I don't usually photograph ruins, but this is such a perfect example of what happens when money is diverted away from the commons and almost solely into private hands.
