Description
Equus constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Equus (the Horse, here the winged horse Pegasus), with Latin text. The original tamer and rider of Pegasus was the Greek hero Bellerophon, but later versions replaced him with Perseus. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up this constellation. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
