Description
Escort Service
An 8th Air Force strike package well on the way back to base in East Anglia in late 1944. Formation discipline has become bit relaxed as the Luftwaffe fighter threat is left behind - and here and there is the inevitable hole in the formation make-up.
The main B17 image is an aircraft from the 381st BG, based at Ridgewell (just south of Cambridge), a unit which was active for the duration of the US Air Force input to WW2 in Europe. The aircraft has suffered significant damage to the tail unit and at least one engine is struggling - a section of P51s has dropped down to provide a little friends escort service. The 381st was one of the early units to drop the olive drab camouflage scheme and go for the weight saving in the polished finish.

The B-17s bring tears to my eyes as they had the greatest aircraft loses in WW2 ... over 4,700 lost. Thank you Pat for keeping the memory of these planes and the crews that flew them alive.
