Description
Standard Oil American was a petroleum company established in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler . Declared an illegal monopoly in a 1911 landmark case, the company was broken up into 34 companies, some of which were named Standard Oil. The name Esso, a phonetic pronunciation of the initials 'S' and 'O' in the name Standard Oil, was used in various states until 1966. The Standard Oil of New Jersey was renamed the Exxon Corporation in 1973.
