From orphan to queen to heroine, Esther - born Hadassah - was a remarkable young woman. Raised by her uncle Mordecai, she was young, bright, beautiful, and through fate became queen to King Ahasuerus. Her Jewish roots were kept secret until a plot to kill all of the Jewish community was revealed to her. Her brave actions saved her community, her uncle was restored to honor, and the deceitful villain was hung. The annual celebration of Purim, which commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire where a plot had been formed to destroy them, honors her.
