Description
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) is a small sparrow measuring about 6.0 inches in length and about 0.77 ounces in weight. It is distinctive for its rufous crown, white collar, and black ear patch. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is widespread in the world, with populations in a variety of locations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In North America, a population of about 15,000 birds is well established in the St. Louis area, which descended from 12 birds introduced from Germany in 1870. For this reason, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow is sometimes called the "German Sparrow". This sparrow feeds mostly on seeds and grain on the ground, and sometimes on insects.
The Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, located in St. Louis County, Missouri, was established in 1997 and includes 4318 acres with 6.5 miles of river frontage. It is an important birding area (IBA) as it is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and is on a major migratory flyway.
This pair of adult Eurasian Tree Sparrows perched on bare branches with fields in the background was photographed at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, in St. Louis County, Missouri on 9-24-2019. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4 VR2 lens to capture this image. Settings:1/2500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 640.
