European hornet (Vespa crabro) on tree bark. This is the largest of the European wasps, and can reach a body length of 3.5 centimetres. This close-up shows the eyes, mandibles (jaws), antennae and front legs. The wings, attached to the thorax, are partially seen in the background. Photographed in August, in Dorset, UK.
