Description
The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine found in much of Europe, and with some populations migrating south in winter to the Middle East and north Africa. Two subspecies are described. Based on genetic evidence, this bird is placed in the family of Old World Flycatchers, Muscicapidae. It is small and measures about 5 inches in length and about 0.6 ounces in weight. The male has a black head, black upperparts, and orange throat and breast, while the female has brown upperparts and head and paler orange on its belly. The European Stonechat's habitat includes coastal areas, grasslands, cultivated and open areas.
This female European Stonechat was photographed at Agamon Hula Nature Reserve, in the Hula Valley, Israel, on 2-5-2019. Shlomo Waldmann, an Israeli bird photographer and guide, brought me to this location. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/1000 sec, f/6.3, ISO 360.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
