Description
It had been several years since I last visited the Grand Canyon and I was looking forward to this visit. I woke up before sunrise, grabbed my camera gear, and headed for one of the more popular viewpoints for sunrise. It was totally fogged in -- you couldn't see twenty feet.
I stayed till after the sun came up, but it didn't change much. It turned into a gray overcast day with off and on rain as I visited the other viewpoints along the South Rim.
As sunset approached, I packed up my gear to take on the shuttle, which you were required to use when visiting the western viewpoints on the South Rim (unless you wanted to walk several miles). I wasn't expecting much, but as the shuttle went further and further I could see the clouds breaking up and the sun shining through.
When I got to the far western viewpoint, Hermit's Rest, I jumped off the shuttle and ran to the edge of the canyon, afraid that the sun might disappear before I could make any images. But this was just the beginning of an exceptional afternoon. The interplay of the setting sun and the clearing clouds made for a grand show until the sun finally dipped below the horizon. Sometimes you get lucky.
