In 1900 the 112 foot tower of the Big Sable Point Lighthouse was covered with black and white steel plates because the original yellow cream brick with which it had been constructed in 1867 had deteriorated due to exposure to the Lake Michigan weather. The light is now automated. Today the only way visitors can access the lighthouse is by foot or bicycle on a sand-swept gravel road in Ludington State Park. I can attest to the fact that the 3.6 mile round-trip trek through dunes and jackpine forest is well worth the effort. Ludington, Michigan. Copyright 2013 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
