Description
In my original artwork, "Bringing the Thunder," I've featured two formations of Republic F-105D Thunderchiefs as they climb to meet their pre-strike tanker before a bombing mission over North Vietnam.
With a possible Cold War European conflict against the Soviet Union in mind, the Thunderchief was originally designed as a penetration bomber, with nuclear ordinance tucked inside its internal bomb bay. However, it was given a new mission as a conventional bomber in the Vietnam War because of it's blistering speed and the fact that it could carry more bombs than a WWII B-17. F-105D pilots carried out the majority of the bombing missions that were launched during the Vietnam War. The majority of those missions were over North Vietnam against some of the most heavily defended targets.
