Description
Another visit to Ragged Falls on the Oxtongue River. This time I am looking down the water course at the tumble of white water molecules bouncing between the rocky bumpers like a billion balls in a giant pin ball machine. The calm water at the bottom of the falls is where I was headed. The water picks up some oxygen during this tumbling cascade. Small fish and insects get disoriented during their chaotic ride down the precipice. Fish are waiting for all three in the deep hole at the bottom. This makes the pool a great place to fish - something that is not lost on any angler, let alone Tom Thomson. We know for sure and have the pictures to prove it that Tom fished at the base of Tea Lake Dam. I bet he fished the pool at Ragged Falls as well. I would!
Waterfalls have benefits other than just fish. The sound and sight of the tumbling water is mesmerizing while soothing. The moving water also creates negative ions that attach themselves to dust, pollen and other airborne debris thus cleaning the air. This action also increases the humidity in the associated microclimate. Waterfalls are a big part of the water and energy cycle. The fact that they exist at all suggests a healthy ecosystem and the presence of countless species that depend on water and the energy contained therein. Frankly, I love to paint at rapids and waterfalls.
I tried to come up with a catchy title that was short yet captured the theme of my painting as well as the place. Everything arriving at the bottom of the falls must be ragged and torn. I did not stumble on my way down but quite enjoyed the "trip" - so to speak. I included the sanctioned public lookout in the upper left - it is barely visible.
I painted some faces - a cast of characters into the cascade of water. If you find one don't expect to be able to point it out to others. It is very much like finding figures in clouds. Not everyone see the same things. Just like the tumbling water and clouds, we are all different and see thigs differently. I will point one or two out to get you started. They are not all orineted the same way. I had fun... and that is the main thing about art. Do you see the moustached menace to the right of the old man? There are many more to find and maybe some I didn't intend.
