Description
The Falls of the Big Sioux cascade through rose-colored Sioux quartzite. The city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, takes its name from the iconic falls. Over the centuries, numerous Native American groups resided near Falls, subsisting on agriculture. French voyagers/explorers first arrived in the early 18th century. Philander Prescott, who camped overnight at the falls in December 1832, is credited as the first American of European descent to view the falls.
