Description
A blue-footed booby dad tends to his young chick on North Seymour Island in the Galapagos. Boobies (Sula nebouxii) share incubation and parenting duties, but dad do most of the feeding in the early days of a chick's life. Male boobies are able to fish in both shallow and deep waters, whereas the females can only dive in deep water. As a result, males have access to different food sources. The dads bring small quantities of shallow-water fish to feed the chick initially; as the chick grows, the female takes over feeding by bringing larger quantities of fish from deeper water. The chick will not develop blue feet until it reaches sexual maturity.
