thanks Len, my teacher advised to get away from practice "rice" paper quickly... it's harder to adhere to a more supportive surface. Also just letting the brush fly helps with spontaneous energy filler strokes...

Artist's Description

This fledgling sits on a branch calling out to his parents, ''Feed Me... Feed Me.'' This image is 8''WX9''H - seal mid center to right of image Sumi-e painting, or "ink picture," was developed in China during the Sung dynasty (960-1274) and brought to Japan by Buddhist monks in the mid-14th century. Sumi-e is a style of monochromatic ink painting where the bold use of ink strokes and washes allowed artists to eliminate all but the essential characteristics, from their subjects. Zen Buddhist priests-painters considered sumi-e more demanding than painting with color, as it required more discipline, emphasizing line, shading, and the use of white space and abstraction. The ink is made from carbon or pine soot combined with glue and binders: opaque for calligraphy, transparent for ink painting.

Ellen Miffitt brings over forty years of artistic experience in the arts to her personal expression and art instruction. Growing up in rural Connecticut kept her close to the earth and nature. When ten years old, “paint by number” kit for a Christmas present started her art career. By mixing the paint and straying outside of the lines, she made that numbered canvas her own. While in high school she was encouraged by an aunt who dabbled in the arts to pursue developing her talent. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, she started painting sumi-e in January of 2002 with Fumiko Kimura and registered “Nine Lives Studio” in Oct of 2002. “As an artist I am constantly involved with that process of transformation: spirit to image on paper,...
