Early February morning, I looked out window and saw this taking place. Two bluebirds locked in a fierce battle.
I've since learned that this is actually more common than most of us might think. It may have been in defense of their paternity or protecting hatchlings. It could also be a fight over the right to mate with a female. Indeed the female was very close by chirping encouragement?
Often the fight will end in death or crippling of one. As often as not the loser will fly away and the victor will be seen with the female at their nesting box.
