Minnesota native Cy Gladen was serving as an aircraft mechanic at Hickam Air Field in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. Selected for pilot training soon afterwards, Gladen returned to the mainland as an Aviation Cadet and was commissioned a pilot and officer at Moore Field, Texas on August 5, 1942. After fighter transition training and a brief stop with the 318th Fighter Group, Gladen joined the 18th Fighter Group’s 44th Fighter Squadron "Vampires" in March 1943 flying P-40s.
My portrait shows 22-year-old Cy Gladen in mid-1943 climbing into his Curtiss P-40F Warhawk on Guadalcanal in the Solomons archipelago. The "F" and "L" models of the P-40 series were fitted with the 1,300 horsepower Packard license-built Rolls-Royce V-1650 'Merlin' engine, which greatly improved high altitude performance over the Allison powerplant. Wade Meyers spent his early years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina before his family moved to Bossier City, La. when he was ten years old. Fulfilling a dream, Wade soloed a Cessna 150 at age 17 and went on to earn his Commercial and Flight Instructor pilot certificates. After high school, he earned a B.A. in History from Louisiana State University in Shreveport while serving in the US Air Force Reserve at Barksdale Air Force Base. With marriage came a move to the beautiful Birmingham, Alabama area. Diving in head first, Wade quit his job at an aviation museum in 2003 and began to work full-time as an aviation artist.
