Artist's Description

When Warhol 1928-1987) posed with his 16mm camera on a rainy day in January 1968 he couldn't imagine that in five months he would nearly die on the operating table after being shot by the mentally disturbed, radical, feminist writer Valerie Solanis. According to the film's director, Paul Morrissey, Andy personally shot no film despite being repeatedly photographed either standing alongside the camera or peering through the lens. After the shooting Warhol was never the same, fully expecting a return visit by Solanis.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
