Description
The high water mark in Clara Bow's (1905-1965) hectic, but brief, career was in William Augustus Wellman's (1896-1975) "Wings" (1927). The World War 1 silent, aviation film was the first movie to win an Oscar for best picture. Wellman had been a pilot in the war, which got him the job to direct the picture. The cloud filled dog fights are still exiting to view.
At only 25 in 1930, Bow had already made 48 films. She was terrified of the microphone and made only a few talking pictures before retiring in 1933. Mental illness also dogged her.
