Artist's Description

Photographer Walker Evans was attracted to decaying buildings. This one is from White Oaks, New Mexico one of the favorite haunts of William Bonney or Henry McCarty or William Anteim, all better known as Billy the Kid. Consensus is that his real name was Henry McCarty and that he killed his first man at 17.

He was killed by Pat Garrett without warning in a darkened bedroom at Fort Sumner, New Mexico in 1881, a few months before "The Gunfight At the OK Corral" in Tombstone, Arizona.

Garrett was himself killed by an unknown assassin in 1908, with a shot in the back, while urinating on a country road in New Mexico. Garrett was portayed by James Coburn in Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid."

The first "ficker" to feature Billy was Vitagraph's 1911 "Billy the Kid," starring Tefft Johnson. Actors who later portrayed the kid in film included Johnny Mack Brown, Roy Rogers, Bob Steele (several times), Jack Buetel, Robert Taylor, Buster Crabbe (several t...

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
