Jean-Paul Belmondo is considered the French Humphrey Bogart, and in the film openly mimics several of Bogie's mannerisms. "Breathless" (1960) was dedicated to Monogram, one of those "poverty row" film studios mentioned earlier.
The film critic, turned director, Jean-Luc Godard was a scholar of American films. He was "moved to tears" in a darkened Paris theater when John Wayne swooped Natalie Wood into his arms after years of hate searching for her.

Godard had little money for "Breathless," so he had cinematographer Raoul Coutard shot it with a handheld Eclair Cameflex camera, using mostly available light; viewing the production as a documentary. The camera was noisy so most of the dialogue had to be re-recorded in post-production.
The dialogue was written daily by Godard, who strongly encouraged improvisation from his actors.
