I bought this little carry pouch for a girlfriend who went back to college at 71 yrs old, so proud of her.

Artist's Description

"Hunter" is the one film directed by Charles Laughton (1889-1962); the only actor of genius according to Sir Laurence Olivier. (1907-1989) www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQT6sqXZoxU Water plays an important in the production; the children escape by raft and there is the stunning image of Shelley Winter's hair fluttering in the under water current.

 Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish are outstanding. "Mitch" even does some singing. And the cinematography of Stanley Cortez (1908-1997) is ravishing, as it was in Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N9LnkKQfuc Cortez said that of all the directors he worked with only Charles Laughton and Orson Welles understood light.

About David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
