Robert Mitchum's "Farewell My Lovely" was set in Los Angeles of the early 1940's, while the neo-film noir "Confidential" was set there 10 years later.
Kim Basinger won an Oscar for playing a high priced Veronica Lake (1919-1973) look-a-like call girl, with the trademark hair over one eye. But it was pure nostalgia for by 1952 Lake's film career was finished.
She acted in three noirs starting with 1942's "This Gun For Hire" which catapulted the radio actor Allan Ladd (1913-1964) to stardom, after years of bit parts including one as a faceless (unbilled) reporter in "Citizen Kane."

All of Lake's noirs had Ladd as her co-star. And it helped that her short stature enabled the diminutive Ladd to tower over her.
Their second collaboration, "The Glass Key" (1942) is based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett.

But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years.
