Mother nature is a force to be reckoned with, and, like any ag person, the weather played a huge role in my life. All my very young years, I loved to sit on my parents' covered front porch during crazy thunderstorms and was enraptured by the power and thrill. That changed as I grew and understood the depth of destruction that power could inflict.
Sheep wagons are the movable housing for the person caring and protection the"band" of sheep. The wagons were placed on or near a high open area for a reason and didn't make for a pleasant night enduring ol' Mother Nature throwing a tantrum. Sheep instinctively go uphill to "bed down" so putting the wagon where the sheep naturally want to go made sense , plus, it helped ensure the sheep would stay near the wagon through the nights which were thick with predators. Spending a night along the mountains in a full blown storm isn't anything I could ever forget! The lightning crashes and rolls like a freight train of echoes along the mount...
Mia DeLode is a fourth generation rancher from central Montana. Born and bred to be part of the rural west, she is an accomplished painter, sculptor, and writer of the culture, animals, people and the humor that is unique to western living. Her paintings appear in many shows and her writing has been featured in Crazy Woman Creek published by Mariner Books, a three part anthology of western women.
