This painting entitled "Firebird" is the result of a number of influences.
My wife and I travelled to America not so long ago to stay with some good friends of ours over Christmas. As we were coming half-way around the world for the visit, I wanted to find some exotic landscape material I could use for my painting while there. With some research I discovered Monument Valley in Utah.
The amazing land formations we found there lived up to every expectation, and in the very cold dawn I got some magnificent photographs.
A friend and collector of my work had been talking to me about a painting he had seen of a phoenix emerging from the fiery red clouds of a sunrise. He tried to describe it to me and I liked the concept, as it fitted with ideas I had worked with. Monument Valley was a perfect setting being just across the border from Phoenix, Arizona and with it's ancient, magic atmosphere.
"Firebird" is a fantasy concept drawing on a combination of the legends of the past and using an existing setting to enhance its sense of reality.
