Description
A typical Great Lakes fishing shanty on Lake Erie's north shore harbor of Port Dover, Canada, once part of the largest fresh water fleet in the world. Today these are fast disappearing from the shores of Lake Erie, Ontario, Michigan and Lake Superior where fish like Smelt Pickerel and Yellow Perch were once in abundances. Like all fishermen, these people plying their craft are a hardy bunch, usually leaving the harbour around 4 AM and returning in the afternoon through all kinds of weather and late into winter until the ice gets too thick for the boats to get through.
I can attest to this when I was invited to spend a day fishing about 30 mile out into the lake in late December in order to get some factual painting references. Needless to say the watercolours I brought along to create some roughs where useless, so all I could manage to bring back were some pencil sketches and a pair of cold hands that seemed to take forever to warm up.
Late in fall, the gear is stored, nets are mended as they wait for spring to start the next season of fishing.
