Description
Flagler College was established in 1968 as a 4-year residential liberal arts college in St. Augustine, Florida.
It is named for Henry Flagler, who founded Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller and built the Hotel Ponce de Leon in 1888. It was the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States. It was designed in Spanish Renaissance style by the architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. Edison Electric powered it with steam and 4,000 electric lights. Louis Comfort Tiffany designed the interior, including stained glass windows and mosaics.
The hotel is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall, a National Historical landmark, and is the centerpiece for Flagler College.
