Description
The day of a Florida Cracker Cowboy started earlier than most folks could even imagine. Before the chickens could even start to crow, the cowboy would already be in the barn with his horse, re-checking the saddle after having a real working mans breakfast of home made biscuits, bacon, eggs, and honey. He's ready to ride the range in search of Springs calves before the storms arrive. Florida's early days before the condominiums, hotels, and tourists consisted of mostly open range dotted with pines, sable palms, cabbage palms, cypress trees, lakes, beautiful oak trees and ponds. As the railroads began to show up in Florida, the cattle industry began to flourish as more and more cattle could be shipped for beef and leather goods to other parts of the country. Okeechobee, Fl was one of the many Southern counties that benefited directly because of the need for more open ranges to keep cattle on. The use of long twisted leather whips to make a loud ''cracking'' sound above the heads of these stubborn cows, who could use the thick underbrush to hide in as well as any wild animal, was how the cowboys obtain the term "Cracker Cowboy". They were an extremely hardy group of people who help shape the beef industry that makes Florida one of the oldest cattle states there is. This particular painting shows the dedication the cowboy has as he and his trusty cow dog avoid the mothers wrath at seeing her calf being carried away, even though it's for the calf's own safety from the huge storm clouds looming over the ranch. Storms in the Spring in Florida are extremely unpredictable!.
