Description
"FLORIDA ROOKERY BAY" - An oil painting by Florida landscape artist, Riley Geddings. The original Florida art canvas oil was painted in 2007, and was signed by the artist.
This artist has painted a scene near the "Ten Thousand Islands" where the Florida Everglades enters into
the Gulf of Mexico. This area is called "Rookery Bay", hence the title, "Florida Rookery Bay".
This scene is a typical view of the mangrove islands and small keys which dominate this area.
The bright Florida sky is dotted with a few distant seagulls, with a closer one looking for a quick meal !
Notice that the mangrove cluster on the left has become a bird rookery. The two birds on the right
searching for small fish in the shallows are Florida's Great White Herons. The viewer can still see the
remnants of a long-abandoned dock in the foreground.
Located at the northern end of the Ten Thousand Islands on the gulf coast of Florida,
Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve represents one of the few remaining
undisturbed mangrove estuaries in North America.
The Rookery Bay and Ten Thousand Islands ecosystem is a prime example of a nearly pristine subtropical mangrove forested estuary.
Rookery Bay Reserve is located in the West Florida subregion of the West Indian Biogeographic Region. The mission of the reserve is
to provide a basis for informed coastal decisions through land management, restoration, research and education. The reserve works in
partnership with local communities to promote Florida's coastal stewardship.
