Description
Many kinds of prickly pear cacti flourish in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Both the pads and the fruit are edible and are made into many products - some with medicinal value. One native bee that dotes on these blooms which are critical to its survival is the Leaf-Cutter Bee (Megachile chilopsidis). Other flying goldminers also specialize in extracting the golden pollen from these beautiful blooms. The miner deep inside this luminous cavern was unidentified by me, but it was likely a leaf-cutter bee or a honey bee. Whichever, it was a busy bee, for sure!
