This was an anniversary present for my son and daughter in law (those in the picture!). They just received it last night and are at this moment headed out on a cruise ship. But my daughter-in-law just texted me to day that it was her favorite of the gifts she got and that she loves it! Me too. When they return I'll ask them to send in a photo of it in their apartment.

Dear Sir/Madam Thank you for filling my order for the Elephant painting. I grew up in Africa, so I love elephants. I chose a white frame which looks good on my green accent wall. Thank you for doing such excellent packaging. The shipment came in good time. With the acrylic glass, the painting is surprisingly light! Everyone who sees the painting loves it! Many thanks, Sylvia Eikenberry

Artist's Description

Foetal inner ear hair cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hair cells in the organ of Corti of a foetus. This delicate structure in the cochlea of the inner ear converts sound vibrations into nerve impulses. The three rows of outer hair cells have V-shaped groups of stereocilia, each with a central kinocilium. In the foetus they are surrounded by numerous microvilli (grey), which are resorbed in the adult. The hair cells are surrounded by endolymph fluid. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause these hairs to move. The movement is converted into nerve impulses that are passed to the brain.

About Steve Gschmeissner

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
