Two simple words, easy to remember, but difficult to, well, follow.
Jesus's words to follow Him are spoken to each believer, no matter when or where we live. And while it seems extra challenging to listen to the words and take them seriously two thousand years later, when He’s not physically in the room, not looking us in the eye, not speaking in a voice audible to our ears, it couldn’t have been easy for the original disciples either, without benefit of the four Gospels neatly written and bound in a book.
We all have our challenges, but the inspiring aspect is that those challenges are not too great for the One who spoke the words, “Follow Me.”
Follow Me, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into a landscape of a beach scene – and while there is a trail, sort of, it’s not a clearly defined one, set out in asphalt and with helpful yellow lines. And where is it leading, anyway – out into the SEA?
The questions are endless, and while our Lord has no problem with questions, sometimes we take action because, deep down in the very core of our soul, we know that this, or that, is what we really should do. Some of these decisions are straightforward and obvious – we treat others kindly, we let go of grudges, we don’t covet, we don’t envy. There’s really no question in these.
But . . . ah. The difficulty comes in the specifics of each of our lives, each of our situations, each of our needs and desires and hopes and fears – how do we follow Him then? What does He want us to do? Couldn’t He possibly just scribble a note on a piece of paper and leave it on the breakfast table?
He could, but obviously chooses not to. So, when we are confused on the specifics, we go back to the basics, the ones we know are part of following Him: treat others kindly. Let go of grudges. Skip the coveting and the envying. And feel free to talk to Him, tell Him everything on our minds and heart – because He already knows. But we – we’re the ones who frequently don’t.
