Two lion sculptures stand on either side of the steps leading up to the main building of the New York Public library on Fifth Avenue: "Patience" on the south and "Fortitude" on the north side. In 1911 the lions were originally given the names "Leo Astor" and "Leo Lenox" in honor of two founders of the library, John Jacob Astor and James Lenox, but the names didn't stick. During the Great Depression Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia dubbed them Patience and Fortitude and those are the names that have become permanent.
