John Jay (top) was a diplomat, and the first Chief Justice of the United States (1789 to 95). Jay was the Governor of New York State (1795 to 1801), where he became the state's leading opponent of slavery. His first two attempts to end slavery in New York in 1777 and 1785 failed, but a third in 1799 succeeded.

James Madison (left) helped frame the Bill of Rights. Madison made a major contribution to the ratification of the Constitution by writing, the Federalist essays with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. In later years, when he was referred to as the Father of the Constitution.

FINDING INSPIRATION TO CREATE FINE ART Nature is an inspiration for many of Jans paintings. She feels encouraged to paint by her surroundings at home in Trabuco Canyon. There are four huge Live Oaks on her property and people have horses, a goat and chickens nearby. There are about a hundred homes in this rural California community at an elevation of about 500 feet at the base of Saddleback Mountain. It gets hot in the summer and rains for a few weeks in the winter. MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Jan fell in love with Mission San Juan Capistrano that is a short drive from her home.
