Description
Artist's impression of Robert Fulton, the designer of the first ever commercially successful steam powered boat, boarding his paddle-steamer the Clermont at New York on its first scheduled voyage of the North River passenger and freight service to Albany and back. Originally registered as the “North River Steamboat of Clermont” after its construction in 1807, it eventually was re-registered as the “Clermont” after the vessel had been widened and rebuilt during the winter of 1807-8.
