Ganges Chasma valley wall, Mars. Coloured satellite image of the Ganges Chasma, part of the Valles Marineris system of deep canyons and troughs. The upper slopes of the Ganges Chasma (top right to bottom left) contain several dark-coloured layers thought to be of volcanic origin. The lighter coloured surface on the plains above the canyon contain wind-blown sand and dust. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 23rd December 2008. The width of this image is roughly one kilometre across.
