Description
George Klein (born 1925), Hungarian-Swedish biologist, with his wife. Having narrowly escaped deportation to Auschwitz during the German occupation of Hungary in 1944 (Klein is Jewish), he moved to Sweden in 1947. In Sweden, he headed the Tumour Biology Institute at Karolinska Medical School. He is noted for pioneering work on cancer and the human immune system, making the connection between the Epstein-Barr virus certain cancers. He has also written books and essays on literature, philosophy and reflections on the Holocaust. Photographed in Stockholm in 1979.
