Description
Giant Galapagos tortoise. This tortoise, Geochelone elephantosus, is a subspecies of the giant Galapagos tortoises and is found only on the island of Santa Cruz. Giant tortoises were once present in huge numbers on the Galapagos Islands until they were almost wiped out by humans. Those remaining live chiefly on the warm, but dry lava soils of the inlands and regularly wander to the highlands for their water & plant growths. The paths beaten out by countless generations of tortoises are also used by humans to find sources of water.
