Description
One problem that Japanese biologists are struggling with is the fact that someone introduced Chinese Giant Salamanders (Andrias davidianus) into Japanese streams. The individuals hybridized with Japanese Giant Salamanders (Andrias Japonicus). Wildlife authorities in Japan are worried that the Japanese Giant Salamander will have its genetics swamped out by the introduced Chinese Giant Salamanders and are removing all hybrids that they find in the wild. They test wild animals using a genetic technique. Hybrids are delivered to the Hanzaki Institute and are kept alive in a series of ponds. Hybrids are not allowed to go back into the wild. This is a hybrid individual - photo taken in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, 2015, courtesy of the Hanzaki Institute and Sumio Okada.
