Glow worm threads. These silk threads are traps set by this glow worm (Arachnocampa luminosa) to catch its insect prey. The threads are 30 to 40 centimetres long and are coated in mucus droplets. This glow worm is found only in caves and sheltered forest areas in New Zealand. There can be hundreds of glow worms per square metre. The adult form of this insect is a fly (a fungus gnat) that lives only a short time before eggs are laid that hatch to renew the larval (glow worm) stage of the life cycle.
