Gondoliers tries to capture the essence of Venice in winter. The February sunshine streaks between tall, canal-side dwellings to light up the water's surface, casting shadows of gondoliers on the walls. These boatmen wear their coats and hats against the brisk air and paddle towards the bright light and warmth of the Grand Canal. I liked the way these gondolas proceeded together with light glinting off their sides and the rippling water. The gondoliers are tall silhouettes. I processed this photograph in monochrome to emphasise the tonal variations and the shapes of the boatmen.
