Description
I was walking a coastal dune trail in Florida when I came upon this Gopher Tortoise having a mid day snack. Growing up here in Florida the Gopher Turtle was very common and seen quite often. We played with them as children. Habitat destruction during the last 30 years has taken it's toll on this gentle prehistoric species and it's burrows are now protected under state law. The tortoise must be relocated before any land clearing can begin.
They are one of the few tortoises who dig burrows which can be up to 40 feet long and are an integral part of it's survival. They are referred to as a cow with a shell because they graze on vegetation. Having originated in North America nearly 60 million years ago it is one of the oldest living species.
