Description
This panorama of the marsh and pond of Gordon's Pond State Park had the iconic Fire Control Towers of the Delaware Coast on the horizon. Just beyond those towers, FCT #6 (left) and FCT #5, lies the Atlantic Ocean beach - and an area known as Whiskey Beach (but that's another story). The Fire Control Towers were important to the Coastal Defense effort during World War II and instrumental in helping to protect the entrance to Delaware Bay from incursion by enemy warships and submarines.
Gordon's Pond is bordered by Cape Henlopen State Park to the north (left) and the city of Rehoboth Beach to the south. The hiking and bike trail is a unique and very popular feature of this fine example of the Delaware State Parks network and provides healthy outdoor exercise for myriad bicyclists and walkers/hikers.
